Sleep Apnea and Snoring
Snoring can irritate your sleep partner and keep you from the fulfilling rest you need, but did you know it can also indicate sleep apnea, a serious medical condition? Sleep apnea affects approximately 12 to 20 million Americans. Characterized by periods of 10 seconds or more when breathing stops, obstructive sleep apnea happens because the soft tissues collapse to block the airway. Central sleep apnea results when the brain fails to signal breathing. Dr. Jane Lilly treats obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA.
Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
- Depression
- Dry mouth upon awakening
- Difficulty concentrating or staying awake
- Episodes of heartburn
- Excessive nighttime perspiration
- Frequent bathroom trips at night
- Loud and/or constant snoring
- Rapid weight gain
- Tossing and turning all night
Undiagnosed sleep apnea increases your risk for high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, weight gain, and job impairment because of memory and focus problems. At your consultation, the dentist will discuss your symptoms and may suggest a sleep study. A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device is the best treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. However, not everyone is willing or able to wear a CPAP while they sleep. For these people, Dr. Lilly may fit you for a custom nightguard to keep your airway open. A nightguard gently repositions the lower jaw to keep the airway free and clear throughout your sleep session.
